TRANSLATION a

At school, her companîons saîd to Wanda, ^'You hâve a veiy funny name." When they teased the little giri too much (quand on la taquinait trop) she would fly into a passion and she sometimes used her fists (jouait des poings).

One day on her way home (rentrant), she was so happy at bringing back good notes to her mother, that she was tempted to dance in the street. As she passed the portress's room (loge) she heard herself called and was told that the postman had brought a registered letter for '* Madame la Princesse Ladislas Bolinska.'' The idea seemed so funny that the little girl began (se mit) to laugh. Putting things to rights (faisant son métier de petite ménagère) she forgot ail about the letter. Suddenly, the bell rang and the postman came in with it. This is what the mother read aloud (à haute voix):

''Madame,

"The communication which I hâve to make is of the highest importance. You know that the eldest brother of my husband, and of yours, the Prince André Bolinski, lost his only son, recently, in a duel. You hâve a daughter whom he is inclined to make his heiress (héritière), on one condition: that you shall never see her again. You will send her to me. My health is poor. You know the wants of a child. May I beg you to find (voulezvous vous charger de trouver) a suitable person (personne de confiance) who will take care of her.

"Thékèse, Princesse Bolinska."

Mme Bolinska desired (tint à ce que) that Wanda herself should answer the letter. The child thanked her aunt, but ended by saying that she would never, never leave her mother.
