Syntax is that part of grammar which treats of the agreement and construction of words and propositions in à sentence,
À proposition is the utterance of a thought.
Ex.: God is our creator, Dieu est notre créateur.
Expl. When [ consider my own being, ” understand that [ could not produce my oWn life myself ; there must be a supreme being that gave it to me. This’ being we all know him, it is God,— Then, considering God, [ say of Him what my judgment thinks of Him. The produce of my judgment expressed by words forms the proposition. Hence, the definition which says that the proposition is the expression Of what we think in ourselves.
A proposition necessurily contains three terms:
Subject, verb and attribute or predicute.
The subject is the person or thiny spoken of.
Ex.: Drunkenness is degrading.
L'ivrognerie est avilisstnte.
The principal word, in this proposition, is drunkenness which we speak of. Et is the subjert.
The verb is the word used to connect the subject with the predicate.
[n the example. “ Drunkenness is degrading?
we wish to attribute the word deyrading to drunkenness, for that end we use is. Is is the verb,
The attribute or predica!e is the word which we use to express what is said of the subject (quality or defect).
Ex : God is merciful.
Dieu est miséricordieux.
In this example, merciful is the attribute.
NB. The attribute is sometimes comprised iu the verb which is then called attributive.
