So that pearls, sediments of urine, bezoar, root of coptis and liquorice and borneol oceur in all recipes; borax, cinnabar and spume of indigo are only once wanting, whilst the other ingredients are very inconstant.

The recipes of the Kheh (Hakka) Chinese differ from the foregoing in containing generally no cinnabar, and in being in the main more complicated, whilst borneol is often replaced by camphor.

I am in possession of a recipe of a Kheh-Chinese, in which oceur a. o. seven different ingredients from the animal kingdom, viz. pearls, bezoar of apes and cows, bear’s gall, amber, sediment of urine and musk. Î had no occasion to control myself the efficacy of their sufflating-powders, although they are extolled as much as those of the Fuhkien-Chinese.

For completeness’ sake I also give here two of their recipes for

suflating-powders.
