Il traite de l'âme: suivant les paroles de l’auteur: «It will be a Book on Animism, comprising Spirit-lore and Demonology, Exoreism and Divination, treating also of Spiritism aud Fetichism, as they manifest themselves by the worship of deceased parents and ancestors in the family-cirele, on their graves, and in temples. It will at the same time become an introduction to the principles and chief features of Taoïism, this system having evolved in the main from the general
ideas concerning souls».
11, Mai 1901, pp. 107—138; Juillet 1901, pp. 167—182; Déc. 1901, pp. 329—377). — XVII. Java. (/bid., Sér. II, 1v, Juillet 1903, pp. 228 —250).
Leide, E. J Brill, 1902, br. in-8, pp. 24.
2) The Religious System of China, Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect, Manners, Customs and Social Institutions connected therewith. By J. J. M. de Groot, Ph. D. — Published with a subvention from the Dutch Colonial Government. — Volume IV. — Book II: On the Soul and Ancestral Worship. Part I. Te Soul in Philosophy and Folk-Conception. — Æ. J. Brill, Leide — 1901, gr. in-8, pp. x - 464 + 2 ff. n. ch. p. l'index.
Il faut lui savoir gré d’avoir le courage de conclure ainsi son enquête: «The Confucian instinct for persecution, embodied in the Law of Heresy, is, and will always be — as long as China is her own — like the sword of Damocles; the protection granted to the Christians by the Powers, is not much more than a hair which prevents the sword from falling. The courage of the men and women who defy that sword, thinking thereby to do a work of merit serving for the good of their heathen fellow men, calls for no homage; there exist, fortunately, in our halcyon days of vain-gloriousness, a few things which are above human praise. But it may well be written, that even if we refuse to admit, with Christianity itself, propagation as its necessary consequence — those men and women deserve something else than the slanderous scorn lately showered upon them by ignorant, prejudiced writers. There is, indeed, another reason for Chinese persecution of the Christians than a concocted register of sins of missionaries».
