« To the Reader »

« Thus nuich onely may suffice (I prpsunie) to help an Eng-lishman vnderstand the \v hole French of Bartas, or a Frenchman the whole Engi^lish of Siluester. If yon ask me why I keepe this kind of Hexameter verse I need say no more but that it is the same, which the author kept in the original. The Bartasian verse (not vnlike herein to the Latin Pentameter) hath ever this properlie, lo part in the mids betwixl two wordes ; so much doe some French prints signifie, with a stroke interposed, as hère in the tirst two pages you may see for example. The neglect of this hath caused many a braue stanza in the Faerie Oueene to end but harshly, which might haue been preuented at the first : but now the fault may be sooner found than amended ».
