En entreprenant d'écrire une histoire du peuple anglais au xix^ siècle, je sais bien quelle est mon audace. Même lorsqu'il s'agit d'époques reculées, au sujet desquelles les documents sont plus rares, les historiens se défient des ouvrages d'ensemble, préfèrent la monographie à la synthèse. A plus forte raison cette attitude semble-t-elle sage, lorsqu'il s'agit des temps modernes, et que le chercheur est d'abord effr…
